Is It Me...........?

The local Magistrates' court heard this case recently. An 18 year old man, the defendant, was walking along a local road accompanied by his dog. The dog is described as, "being like a small pitbull terrier." The dog was not being walked on a lead / leash. The dog ran into the roadway. A car driven by a young woman, the victim in this case, was approaching. The defendant saw the car and waved his arms around to try to get her to stop but the car hit the dog. The court heard that the defendant, "went berserk," kicking and punching the car, swearing and shouting abuse and terrifying the driver. The court was informed that the defendant caused damage to the car to the tune of £500, amongst other things, 2 windows were broken.

The dog, we are told, was severely injured. His skull was crushed and had to be rebuilt, whilst one of his eyes had to be surgically removed. The defendant claimed to have paid vet's bills of £700.
The court was told by the defendant's solicitor that after the incident, the defendant had been voluntarily attending an anger management course and was making good progress.

The defendant admitted a charge of using threatening behaviour and was sentenced to a 12 month community rehabilitation order, (whatever one of those is) and ordered to pay court costs of £20. No compensation was awarded to the victim.

So, the victim ends up with a bill for £500 to repair her car and the defendant, who the law says should have had his dog on a lead, pays £20. I will wait with baited breath for a court report that says he has been found guilty of allowing his dog to be on a road without a lead and that he has been fined.

Baited breath mind you, I sense that if I was to hold my breath, I may not be around for much longer.
